To ensure service learning is a common experience in every local classroom, the Service-Learning Partnership coordinates service-learning projects, programs, and events both in schools and in the community.

  • Teacher Support
Through teacher workshops and in-class assistance, the Service-Learning Partnership supports teachers and students as they integrate service learning into their daily coursework. To best support local teachers, the Partnership also provides curriculum and assessment planning, facilitates partnerships with community-based agencies, coordinates logistical project details, and provides mini-grants and stipends to attend regional service-learning conferences.

In collaboration with the Boulder Valley School District and the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Service-Learning Partnership will host two professional development in-service trainings for K-12 teachers and school administrators during the 2007-08 academic year.

  • School-Wide Programs

The Project YES Service-Learning Partnership will be hosting five after school programs at four elementary and one middle school in Lafayette, CO. Each program will be implemented with support from
volunteers, AmeriCorps members, and Project YES staff. Programs will be held at Lafayette Elementary, Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer Elementary, Sanchez Elementary, Ryan Elementary, and a multi-age Youth Council at Angevine Middle School. Each program is unique and aim to strengthen and promote youth voice and civic engagement.

In addition, the Partnership in collaboration with Naropa University will host the Public Achievement program during the 2007-2008 academic year at both Centaurus High School and Angevine Middle School. An international youth initiative, Public Achievement introduces students to the concepts of citizenship, democracy, and public work.

Likewise, AmeriCorps members, trained in service-learning methodology, will continue to collaborate with teachers at a variety of schools in the Boulder Valley School District to support the design and implementation of service-learning projects and curriculum units. The Partnership will also continue to offer seminars and professional development opportunities to educators in Boulder Valley.

  • Community-Wide Initiatives & Events

A grassroots civic education initiative, the Lafayette Youth Project, which aims to create a shared vision for Lafayette youth, is part of a statewide Communities Strengthening Colorado grant. Managed by Project YES and Naropa University staff, the Lafayette Youth Project recently concluded (in response to dialogue with 500 residents) that Lafayette youth are in need of additional recreational, employment, and civic engagement opportunities and bilingual and emotional support. To ensure identified needs are met, the Lafayette Youth Project has provided $40,000 in awarded funds to support the pilot of youth-related projects throughout the local community. Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee (LYAC)

"We are 25% of the population, and 100% of the future."

In response to the need for additional civic engagement opportunities for youth, the LYP worked with the Lafayette City Council to create LYAC. Currently, this group of young people is working to represent the interest of Lafayette youth as well as offer the youth perspective on important issues to the City Council. Currently, LYAC is addressing the need for a community youth center and challenges faced by undocumented youth.
