In spring 2010, Project YES hosted after-school service-learning programs at Lafayette
Elementary School, Escuela Bilingue Pioneer Elementary School, and Ryan Elementary School. Over the course of the semester, up to 25 students in in each Youth Council developed and implemented successful service-learning projects. At the completion of their projects, each group wrote the following statements describing their learning and accomplishments:
"We are the Project YES Pioneer Elementary Youth Council. This semester we created a play about
global warming.We wrote the
script and designed the set from recyclable materials. Global warming means the
temperature of our earth is rising and it happens because people use too many
fossil fuels. We chose to make our
play about global warming because polar bears are dying and a lot of people
don’t care about it.While we made
the play, we learned that polar bears are important because they help the
ecosystem and there are many ways to stop global warming like recycling, not
watching TV, and raising awareness about the problem. We hope our play will help because if people know about global
warming then they will help too!"
"We are the Project YES Ryan Elementary Youth Council. This spring we got donations for people
in Haiti because there was an earthquake there and people needed supplies that
they didn’t have. To collect donations, we first called businesses and schools
to see if they would put a box out for us.Then, we decorated a lot of boxes and took them to the
places that we called.After six
weeks, we picked up the boxes with the donations. Then we took them to the Volunteer
Resource Center at CU Boulder so they could give them to One World Running to
send over to Haiti.We collected
over 300 items including summer clothes, medical and school supplies, and
shoes.We learned that you can
always help the world without spending a lot of money and donations can be very
important.Not everybody in the
world has what they need."
"We are the Project YES Lafayette Elementary Youth Council. This spring, we accomplished collecting
donations, making dog treats, and making dog toys for an organization called
Canine Partners of the Rockies.Canine Partners of the Rockies is an organization that raises and trains
dogs to help people with physical disabilities. During our project, we learned
that dogs can do many things to help people like turn on lights and open
doors. One of the dogs even came
to our school and showed us all of her tricks. We also learned sign language, how to sew, and how to make
cookies! Our project is important because by helping the dogs at Canine
Partners, we are helping people live better and making our community
stronger."
